North Wilkesboro, N.C. — The North Wilkesboro Rotary Club presented a check for $10,200 to Wilkes YMCA Executive Director Caroline Whitson at the club’s meeting on November 3, 2025. The donation, made possible through a Rotary Foundation grant and a donation from the local club, supports the YMCA’s Bright Beginnings program, which helps local children start the school year prepared and confident.

Bright Beginnings pairs children with community volunteers for an afternoon of shopping for new clothes and shoes. Each child also receives a backpack filled with grade-specific school supplies. Families are recruited through YMCA programs and in partnership with The Housing Authority and Wilkes County Schools to ensure the program serves those who need it most.

To keep the experience personal, the Y hosts two shopping days each year with the support of Kohl’s and Burlington Shoes, both who have been extraordinary partners for this program.

“One of the best parts of the program is seeing a child’s face light up as they pick out their backpack, or find that perfect pair of shoes they can't wait to wear,” Whitson said. “Those moments remind us why Bright Beginnings is so special.”

The YMCA extended special thanks to Rotary member and Wilkes Family YMCA Board member Jenny Richardson, who led the grant request. “The Rotary Club’s commitment to serving local families ensures that hope, dignity, and joy reach those who need it most,” Whitson added.

“Bright Beginnings is one of our most meaningful programs because it lifts families up and reminds us all what community truly means,” Whitson said. “We are so grateful to the Rotary Club and all of our donors for making this signature program possible.”

If you'd like to give to Bright Beginnings or are looking for an opportunity to get involved, please reach out to Wilkes Family YMCA Executive Director Caroline Whitson.
